The Arusha National Park offers everything one wants to see regarding volcanic features and lakes.
This small park, whose altitude ranges from 1500m above see level to 4562m at the summit of Mt. Meru comprises an area of only 137 km² but the scenery is extremely varied. There is Mt. Meru, the dormant volcano as well as the small extinct Ngurudoto Crater and the beautiful Momela Lakes. The name of the park and the town of Arusha is derived from that of the waarusha people who originally lived here.
You are likely to see buffaloes (especially in the forest glades), elephants (who are responsible for creating glades), hippos, giraffes, warthogs, antelopes, zebras, black and white colobus, monkeys and blue monkeys.
Leopards and hyenas are present but rarely seen (there are no lions).
There are also over 400 species of birds and 700 species of butterflies, so their fans are in for a treat.
