Much of southern Tanzania, from the volcanic southern highlands to scenic Lake Nyasa, is mountainous and offers wildly beautiful terrain. Still, the majority of visitors pass through quickly en-route to Malawi and Zambia - a shame, as there is a lot to see and do.
The southern highlands begin at Makambako Gap, half way between Iringa and Mbeya and extend southwards into Malawi. They extend along the mountainous chain running between Morogoro and Lake Nyasa in the East and the Zambian border in the West.
It's a very scenic area, with wide rolling panoramas, good hiking possibilities, a temperate climate and profusion of wildflowers on the hill sides during the rains.
Other major attractions of southern Tanzania are numerous cultural and natural attractions nearby, including the forest of the western Udzungwa mountains and the Ruaha Nationalpark.
