what to expect

The Rongai route begins on the northern side of the mountain. It is a long drive to the starting point but you are rewarded with fantastic views and sometimes you will be the only climbers around. If
you take this route up the mountain you are obliged by park rules to descend via the Marangu Route which is the most popular and used route.

  • Day 01: Kilimanjaro Airport/ Transfer to Moshi

    We will pick you up from the Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer you to Arusha. It will take almost 1 hour to drive. Dinner and accommodation will be in the lodge in Arusha. We will give you all information about your holiday trough your driver and guide there.
  • Day 02: 02: Activities in Kilimanjaro & safe day

    Today is special day for acclimatization of altitude, also is the security day as sometime your language remain at the transit Area and arrive the second day. You have time to relax at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, you can organize different trip direct from the reception like walking safari at the foot of Kilimanjaro for coffee plantation, Banana plantation, visit the Elephant Caves and cultural program. Overnight stay will be at the same Lodge.
  • Day 03: Drive to Rongai Gate (2.100 m) Climbing to Camp 1 (2.800 m) 12 Klm

    Now we transfer to the start of the Rongai route, close to the Kenyan border, where we begin the ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The first night we will be camping at Camp 1.(Walking planning 3-4 hrs)
  • Day 04: Climbing from Camp 1 to Kikelewa Camp (3.679 m) 7 Klm

    Walk up through giant heathers and moorlands to Kikelewa Camp. Dinner and overnight stay in the camp. (Walking 5 -6 Hrs)
  • Day 05: Climbing from Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4.330 m) 7Klm

    Climbing that day is a gradual ascent and we get great views of the plains of Kenya below and the spectacular Mawenzi Tarn above. Dinner and overnight stay in Mawenzi Tarn Hut.(Walking 4-5 hrs)
  • Day 06: Climbing from Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo Hut (4.700 m) 7 Klm

    Today we climb through the lunar desert of the Saddle, the lava-covered expanse between the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Dinner and a short stay until 11 p.m. at Kibo hut. (Walking planning 3-4 hrs)
  • Day 07: Climbing to Uhuru Peak (5.895 m) Descend to Horombo Hut (3.790 m) 19 Klm

    We get up at 11 p.m. and after a snack we proceed to the summit at around midnight. After 5-6 hours we pass Gilman's point at the crater rim on 5.681 m and after another 1-2 hours we pass Uhuru Peak on 5.895 m. We reach the summit in the early morning of the fifth day and after taking sunrise pictures we start descending to Horombo hut. Dinner and an overnight stay at Horombo hut. (Walking planning 7-9 hrs)
  • Day 08: Descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1.840 m) 19 Klm

    The last day we descend from Horombo hut to Marangu gate. We will bring you back to the hotel in Arusha. In the evening we transfer you to the airport / start the safari program. (Walking planning 5 - 7 hrs)

DAY 1, 2

The lodge is situated at a height of 1300m on the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro and it is just a few minutes away from Machame Gate, the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park. 

The small bustling town of Moshi which is roughly 20km from the lodge, can be reached easily thanks to the good tarmac roads.

DAY 3

The Rongai route ascends Kilimanjaro from the north-eastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya. This route retains a sense of unspoilt wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching it from the north.

DAY 4

Rongai Kikelewa  Camp is the second stop on used on the Rongai route and situated in the lower end of the lobelia and giant groundsel zone.

Location Kikelewa Campsite is situated on the Rongai Route at an elevation of 3,600m.

DAY 5 

Along the northern border of Tanzania lies Mount Kilimanjaro, the roof of Africa. At 19,340 feet, its summit is over 2000 ft higher that is nearest rival in Kenya and no other mountain in the world exceeds its mass. The mountain is visible from the plains of the Kenya and Tanzania and consumes the horizon with its expanse. Though it rests just 3 degrees below the equator, it has snow and glaciers covering its summit much of the year.

DAY 6

Kibo Hut is a 5 hour hike across the saddle between mawenzi and Kibo and is situated at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall at an elevation of (4,750m). From here you will attempt the summit to the Uhuru Peak.

DAY 7

Horombo hut is a village of huts perched on a small plateau, with buildings similar to Mandara, but with a total capacity of 120 climbers! Horombo is normally bustling with hikers, guides and porters, with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatisation. A hike towards the Mawenzi hut, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (about 3 hours up and 1,5 hours down), is strongly recommended. This hike will further assist with the process of acclimatisation. Remember to drink enough water and move slowly! All meals for the day are provided at the hut. Retire to bed early and get a last good night’s rest.
